Holiday cheer will be in the air on Saturday, December 3rd at Nicklaus Children's Hospital.

Thousands of people are expected to pull into the Blue Garage at its main hospital campus to drop off new and unwrapped toys, games and stuffed animals for patients.

It's all a part of its annual Spread Joy drive.

Children and Family Experiences Manager Jenny Oquendo anticipates between 33,000 and 35,000 items will be collected.

She says, "These toys typically are collected on that one day and last us an entire year for not only the main hospital, but really those toy needs throughout the entire system."

She stresses along with holidays and birthdays, they celebrate every large milestone.

"Toys are the currency of children, so we keep them stocked throughout our closets within the hospital. We think about a child being bored at the bedside, there are toys that are available for them on lend but also for them to keep."

Because they also treat teens and kids with unique circumstances, the hospital welcomes gift card donations.

Oquendo adds, this year along with the physical drive at the hospital, they've added a virtual toy drive. Not only does it save storage space, but it allows them to purchase specialized toys as needed.
