The City of Boynton Beach has officially declined a merger proposal from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Mayor Ty Penserga at Tuesday night's commission meeting announced that "certain pension liabilities that the city must meet over the course of the next seven to eight years makes the possibility of a merger financially unfeasible."

Sheriff Ric Bradshaw this week announced that the city had sent him a letter cancelling merger talks.

New Boynton Beach Police Chief Joe Degiulio says the department needs more staffing, communications, and ways to build better relationships between police and the community.

He expressed a feeling of relief that merger talks have ended and wants to grow his department by six officers.
